Aztec God - Crested Serpent Eagle 'Spilornis cheela'
Serpent eagles range world-wide, but. this Thailand species, Spilornis cheela is small for an eagle. Displaying the mannerisms of its family, this Thai raptor strikes the classic pose of the serpent eagle on the Mexican Flag. These raptors evolved as snake specialists by using their talons in an attack much more than most raptors, where the beak is the primary weapon, with talons holding the prey. Handling most raptors is simply a question of roosting a calm bird so nervous talons don’t grip a forearm — and then avoiding the beak. In the serpent eagle, its talons first in a motion reminiscent of a boxer’s hands – except faster.
